Project Overview

The Weipa Solar Farm is situated on approximately 2.5 hectares of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa land. When completed, the project will be the first utility-scale fuel displacement solar project in Australia. The Weipa Solar Farm will demonstrate the technical and economic potential of using solar PV to power remote mine operations.

The 1.2 megawatt (MW) alternating current (AC) project will be powered by approximately 18,000 First Solar advanced thin film PV modules. In the middle of the day, electricity generated by the solar farm will offset a portion of the existing diesel-generated electricity, saving up to 600,000 litres of diesel each year that would have otherwise been required to fuel Rio Tinto Alcan’s 26MW power station.

The Weipa Solar Farm is funded by the Australian Government’s Regional Australia’s Renewables Industry (I-RAR) program established and operated by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)
